A news analysis from NBC News makes the case that former President Donald Trump is sabotaging his closing argument by lobbing personal attacks at Vice President Kamala Harris rather than focusing on core issues.
The analysis, written by Jonathan Allen and Katherine Doyle, writes that Trump is “throwing more personal punches at Vice President Kamala Harris” instead of trying to show voters how he would be better at handling immigration and inflation.
“As Election Day nears, he has been taking long detours away from substance — ramping up personal attacks on Harris and other Democrats, sprinkling his speeches with profanity and musing about off-topic subjects like the size of the late golf legend Arnold Palmer’s genitals,” the authors observe. “On Tuesday, he suggested, without evidence, that Harris is campaigning under the influence.”

This is a contrast to the kind of argument that Trump’s campaign is trying to deliver in its closing ads, which tie Harris to an unpopular President Joe Biden and argue that she will do nothing different if elected president.
GOP strategist Brad Todd tells NBC News that the ad does a good job of arguing that “America’s on the wrong track and you can’t keep the same people in charge,” although he questioned whether Trump could deliver this message instead of focusing on “revving up people who are already voting for him.”
