Mark Halperin, the first journalist to report that President Joe Biden was dropping out of the 2024 race, believes that President Donald Trump has given Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth “one more chance” before firing him.
During a report on Thursday, Halperin revealed that U.S. National Security Advisor Mike Waltz and other members of his team were on the chopping block, with firings expected to come before next week.
In the same report, Halperin stated that Hegseth was also in danger of losing his job.
“[White House Chief of Staff] Susie Wiles and other senior officials have made it clear to Pete Hegseth he has to get the Pentagon staffed at the senior level by people who know how to run the building, who are, in the word used over and over, adults,” Halperin said. “Pete Hegseth, I don’t know that, this is not what my sources said, but the mood music is, he’s got one more chance to get this right.”

“He has to bring in people, he has to staff it right, and he has to stop having these big controversies,” he continued. “[President Donald Trump is] giving Pete a full chance to fix it. But he’s got to fix it.”
“And like I said, I wouldn’t be surprised to see, you know, and I mean this in all seriousness, I’ve said this the other day, like a General Kellogg, who’s three star retired, come in, but somebody who’s got stars on their shoulder, who is in Trump MAGA world.”
In recent days, top Pentagon officials close to Hegseth have left their positions, causing chaos within the department.
