Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL) didn’t hold back in his criticism of President Donald Trump on Tuesday, who the Democratic lawmaker credited with uniting Canadian voters in opposition to the MAGA leader.
Speaking to reporters at his first Capitol Hill news conference since announcing his retirement last week, the longtime Illinois senator thanked Trump for his contributions in helping to elect new Prime Minister Mark Carney and saving the country’s Liberal Party, according to Punchbowl News’ Max Cohen.
“Now if he could just be a positive unifying force in the United States instead,” Durbin, the No. 2 Democrat in the Senate, said Tuesday as he mocked the president.

The comments came just after Canada’s national election wrapped with a stunning comeback of the Liberal Party, which has been attributed to Trump’s antagonistic threats surrounding his idea of annexing the country.
“President Trump is trying to break us so America can own us,” Carney said during his victory speech Monday night. “That will never, ever happen.”
Moments earlier, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer threw his own jab at Trump and Senate Republicans.
“Senate Republicans are complicit,” Schumer said Tuesday, as reported by Cohen. “They’re co-conspirators with Trump’s horrible, horrible decisions.”
