MSNBC economics analyst Steve Rattner on Friday said that President Donald Trump was only compounding the economic damage being done by tariffs by adding his own erratic behavior into the mix.
Appearing on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,” Rattner outlined how Trump’s behavior was making it impossible for American businesses to make sound long-term plans.
“The tariffs themselves are terrible,” he said. “But it’s also the way they’re going about them, the erratic behavior. One day it’s 5 percent, then it’s 25 percent, then 200 percent on French champagne. And all this uncertainty is just really debilitating to the market and to businesses and it affects their judgments.”

He then claimed that CEOs are saying behind the scenes that Trump’s policies are being incredibly damaging to their businesses as they simply cannot make decisions when they have no idea from day to day whether they will have to pay massive tariffs on inputs that come from foreign countries.
“So the tariffs in and of themselves would be bad,” he emphasized. “The way they’re going about it has compounded it and put it on steroids of badness.”
