The revival of the Signalgate scandal will be a test of President Donald Trump’s leadership and loyalty to Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, according to MSNBC’s Jonathan Lemire.
The defense secretary had already been facing criticism and calls for his ouster for revealing military plans on the commercially available Signal app with a reporter present, and those calls are growing louder after new reporting revealed that he discussed those operations in another group chat that included his wife, brother and personal attorney.
“The first Signalgate was a blow that really knocked them off stride, beginning a bit of a losing streak for this White House, which we’ve seen with the tariffs and other issues since,” Lemire told “Morning Joe.”
“We’ll have to see how the president responds to this. As noted, we reported, I reported at the time, it has not changed to this point. The president with a quote, ‘no scalps’ – not my words, senior advisers’ words – policy here that they don’t want to force someone out to give the media a victory. This is the White House’s thinking here that President Trump regrets in his first term, how he pushed out national security adviser [Michael] Flynn and others early on. He wants to dig in his heels and fight.”
Trump expended a considerable amount of political capital getting the former Fox News host confirmed as defense secretary over the objections of all 47 Democratic senators, and Lemire said the president seems unlikely to throw him overboard so soon into his tenure.
“We should also just note that Secretary Hegseth is very popular in the MAGA base,” Lemire said. “The fight to get him confirmed reminded so many of the fight to get Justice [Brett] Kavanaugh confirmed. He’s very popular among Fox News viewers and the like. We’ll have to see what happens, though, when the president is asked about this today.”
