Tech billionaire Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla who is spearheading the massive Department of Government Efficiency cuts, bemoaned attacks on Tesla dealerships and vehicles nationwide – and suggested darker forces may be responsible.
Musk joined Fox News anchor Sean Hannity on Tuesday and was asked about the numerous protests — and several attacks — targeting Tesla, which he has called terrorism.
“I have to ask: Why?” asked Hannity. “I woke up this and saw that Teslas were put ablaze in one of your dealerships in [Las] Vegas. I’ve seen this happen all over the country. Bullets are being fired. Charging stations are being put ablaze. Teslas are being put ablaze. You have experienced threats of assassination. You and your family. What have you done that warrants this?”

“Yeah it’s come as quite a shock to me that there is this level of hatred and violence from the left,” said Musk. “I thought the left was — that Democrats were supposed to be the party of empathy, the party of caring. And yet they’re burning down cars, they’re firebombing dealerships. They’re firing bullets into dealerships. Smashing up Teslas.”
Musk called his company “peaceful” — “We’ve never done anything harmful.”
“I’ve never done anything harmful. I’ve only ever done productive things,” he insisted.
Musk then attacked the left, repeating often-used lines of attacks from President Donald Trump.
“I think we just have a deranged — there’s some kind of mental illness thing going on here. Because this doesn’t make any sense.”
Musk then floated a conspiracy theory, another tactic deployed by MAGA allies.
“I think there are larger forces at work as well,” he said. “I mean, I don’t know. Who’s funding it and who’s coordinating it? Because this is crazy. I’ve never seen anything like this.”
Since Trump’s inauguration, there have been more than 100 protests at dozens of Tesla showrooms in cities including San Francisco, Berkeley, Minneapolis, and Kansas City. There have been multiple cases of vandalism of Tesla vehicles, including wheel damage and spray painting.
Tesla charging stations in Massachusetts were targeted by arson attacks, a dealership in Oregon was hit by gunfire and a dealership in Colorado was targeted by Molotov cocktail attacks.
DOGE, meanwhile, has made numerous cuts that have faced significant criticism, including proposals to shut down agencies such as the U.S. Agency for International Development and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.
The federal government has laid off more than 62,000 workers in the first two months of the year, a 41,311% increase compared to the same period last year.
