House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) said that all votes in the U.S. House of Representatives would be canceled for the rest of the week after he lost a bid to block proxy voting for members of Congress who are new moms.
“That rule being brought down means that we can’t have any further action on the floor this week,” Johnson told reporters of a rule that would have blocked Rep. Anna Paulina’s (R-FL) effort to bring proxy voting to mothers of infants.
Instead, the House voted to allow a ballot on the measure to allow remote voting for the members with newborns.
“That means we will not be voting on the SAVE Act for election integrity,” the speaker continued. “We will not be voting on the rogue judges who are attacking President Trump’s agenda. We will not be taking down these terrible Biden policies with the CRA votes. All that was just wiped off the table.”

NOTUS correspondent Reese Gorman called it “a huge embarrassment for Johnson.”
Punchbowl’s Jake Sherman noted that a previous House rule allowed Johnson to vote on the so-called SAVE Act, which would require proof of citizenship for federal elections.
It was not immediately clear why Johnson was unprepared for the defeat.
