Harvard University ordered people to “shelter in place” on Sunday after a suspect fired shots near a Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) stop.
The university utilized its emergency alert system to disseminate information about the lockdown.

“Transit Police are reporting shots fired at the Harvard Sq MBTA station. CPD, Transit, State, and Harvard Police are searching the Square for the suspect. Shelter in place. Please enter the nearest building and stay there until all clear is given,” the university said at 2:46 p.m.
A second message at 3:07 p.m. indicated that authorities were still searching for the shooter.
“Search for suspects is ongoing. Continue to shelter in place,” the alert said.
