Although national security adviser Mike Waltz still has a job after he inadvertently added journalist Jeffrey Goldberg to a Signal group that discussed classified war plans, Politico’s Playbook reports that he’s still on thin ice.
In particular, insiders in the Trump White House no longer trust Waltz because they don’t believe his claims that he has never spoken with Goldberg and has no idea how Goldberg was added to his contacts.
“He has no credibility because he continues to lie,” one White House source tells Politico reporter Dasha Burns. “Everyone is united against him. When you’re becoming a liability or a distraction for the president, it’s time to resign.”
Burns also adds that she believes “the walls are closing in” on Waltz because of both “the substance of the story and his handling of the fallout.”

That said, Trump appears reluctant to cut Waltz loose for the moment simply because doing so would be seen as rewarding Goldberg, whom Trump personally loathes for reporting on comments Trump supposedly made describing dead American soldiers as “suckers” and “losers.”
“So it’s possible Waltz survives or that it requires a little distance from this relentless news cycle before the proverbial guillotine comes down,” Burns speculates.
