President Donald Trump’s trade war is a continuation of his American isolationism across all administration policies, said former Gov. John Kasich (R-OH).
Speaking to MSNBC on Thursday, Kasich said that he hoped that the Trump tariffs were nothing more than a negotiating ploy.
“We’re heading into isolationism,” he said, noting that Trump’s policies ensure the U.S. is no longer involved with anyone else worldwide.

“We just want to shut everything down. And you know, to whom is given great power, great responsibility is expected,” Kasich commented, citing the proverb popularized by Spider-Man.
“We’re sort of walking away from it,” Kasich said. “And we did that after World War I, and look what happened to us when we ended up into World War II. I don’t want to over-dramatize this, but what I’m saying is there’s now the philosophy that America ought to withdraw. You know that — woe is us. We have such a hard time. Everybody is pounding us. Really? Have you looked around at the growth of wealth in this country? I know there are people struggling, I’m very well aware of that, but when you think about where we are…”
He cited higher life expectancy and remarkable technologies making lives better.
“Now, all we’re saying is things are bad. No, they’re not bad. We’re not a victim. We actually have a pretty darn good country,” he continued. “And now, to be saying that we’re going to get into a fight with everybody around the world, and we’re going to kind of withdraw. We’re going to lock the doors and pull down the blinds and fend for ourselves.”
He questioned how long that could work.
“So, this whole thing of boy, we have to change everything. The reason we have problems in this country is because the politicians can’t manage the budget,” he ranted. “They can’t manage spending, they can’t do it, and they won’t do it. So, you know, am I revved up about this? Absolutely. … I think it’s a very bad policy. It’s never worked, and I don’t believe it ever will.”
