Conservative journalist Michael Warren told CNN on Monday that he believes Sen. James Lankford (R-OK) is not happy about President Donald Trump’s plans to implement sweeping new tariffs on all imported goods this week.
After watching a clip of Lankford over the weekend comparing Trump’s plans to a “kitchen remodel” in which “there’s a bit of a mess at the beginning, but everybody has a long-term look at where we’re headed,” Warren said he could detect a hint of panic in the senator’s eyes.
“I think that messaging is, you know, he’s like blinking in morse code, ‘Please do not actually do these tariffs,'” he said. “I think there’s a lot of of terror.”

CNN columnist Stephen Collinson then chimed in to provide an overview of the chaos that Trump’s trade war threats are already causing to the American economy.
“The damage that’s being done is almost being done because no one knows what’s going to happen,” he said. “Trump says one day, ‘We’re going to have reciprocal tariffs on everybody.’ The next day, he says, ‘I’m going to let some countries off that level.’ Uncertainty hurts the markets.”
Joel Rubin, the president of the Washington Strategy Group, similarly pointed to the mass uncertainty surrounding the tariffs as wreaking havoc on the economy.
“This is chaos,” he said. “This is uncertainty. I’m thinking about it as ‘Let Them Eat Cake Day’ on April 2nd rather than ‘Liberation Day.’ President Trump was not voted in to raise prices, but that’s what’s going to happen. Ninety percent of global trade is going to be affected by these tariffs.”
