Presidential historian Michael Beschloss appeared on MSNBC’s “Way Too Early” to issue a new alarm about former President Donald Trump’s assaults on the democratic process.
“We should all be really vigilant and sleep with one eye open,” Beschloss explained. “Because you’ve got Donald Trump, even more than he did in 2016 or 2020 saying that the election is going to be rigged and I’m not going to take this lying down. He’s made much more preparation for this than he did in either of those earlier elections. And at the same time, the stakes of this election could not be higher.”
Beschloss then argued that Trump is the first-ever major-party nominee who is “talking about suspending the Constitution, pitting our Defense Department against his political enemies with military tribunals.”

After taking some time to warn people about some “glaring red flags” regarding election misinformation that they might see on social media, the historian turned back to once again emphasize the stakes of the coming election.
“We’ve never seen such a dramatic difference, such a dark difference between one candidate, who has certain views but is going to carry on our democracy, and another who’s saying I’m going to bring in an authoritarianism of a kind I’ve never seen before,” he said. “The stakes could not be higher.”
